2010 Day Trips - All trips by Motor Coach

Bavarian Inn & Germantown

April 29th (Thurs.) Depart 8am Return approx. 7pm

Lunch included: Chicken Schnitzel, Spaetzels, and Strawberry Schaum Torte at the Bavarian Inn in Glendale, WI.  Experience the Milwaukee area's rich German heritage as we visit the historic community of Dhiensville Settlement in Germantown, WI.  Guided tour of the Bast Bell Museum which features over 5000 different types of bells.  Also at the settlement is the Christ Church Museum, circa 1862 along with 20 other original structures.  Visit German Glass & Gifts.  They sell German and European collectibles including hand-carved cuckoo clocks from the black Forest and Hummel figurines from Northern Bavaria.

 

Wisconsin Tasting Tour

Lunch at the Chartroom Restaurant, known for the best broasted chicken. Enjoy the tasty treats our northerly neighbors create!  First is the Jelly Belly Candy Company in Pleasant Prairie.  Board the Jelly Bell Express train for a tour of the distribution center followed by a tasting of the 50 flavored jellybeans know throughout the land.  Next, we learn the art of kringle making at one of Racine's fabulous bakeries.  This exquisite Danish coffee cake has layers of light pastry filled with fruits or nuts and is a Wisconsin tradition.  After lunch we continue our tour at the Miller Brewing Company and sample the product that made Milwaukee famous.

 

Cirque Shanghai & Chinatown

Lunch will be a family-style at the House of Fortune Restaurant.  Direct from China its Cirque Shanghai, returning again this summer to Navy Pier's Skyline stage.  See Chinas' finest acrobatic entertainers.  This dazzling showcase embraces the traditional juggling and dance along with their beautiful costumes.  Before the show we will spend some time in Chicago's colorful Chinatown.

 

Fair Oaks Farm & Strongbow Inn

July 15 (Thurs). Depart 8:30am Return approx. 3:45pm $75 Res/$78 Non-Res

Lunch will be a Turkey dinner at the historic Strongbow Inn.   This state of the art dairy farm is one of the largest in the United States.  Your visit to the farm will give you the opportunity to see how our dairy industry operates.  The tour will consist of a Bus tour of the farm including a drive right through a modern barn of Holstein cows to see how milk is produced.  The other diary adventures at the farm include a visit to the ultra modern birthing barn where an average of 80 calves are born each day.  See the Fair Oaks Farms Cheese Factory as the freshest cheeses are made right before your eyes. 

 

Fox River Lunch Cruise

Lunch will be a fantastic buffet on the Fox River Queen followed by live musical Entertainment.  The beautiful town of St. Charles, IL is set on sloping streets lined by gardens and bursting with charm and history.  Here we have some time to shop the unique boutiques and market areas.

 

Cantigny & Mill Race Inn

Lunch will be at Historic Mill Race Inn on the banks

of the scenic Fox River.  Enjoy a lovely day in the far western Chicago Suburbs.  Visit the memorable Cantigny Park, which boast two of the Chicago areas top attractions.  See Robert R McCormick Museum, the historic mansion, which depicts the country home of the family of the Chicago Tribune, the proclaimed "Worlds Greatest Newspaper".  The mansion features 35 rooms, 13 bedrooms and 12 fireplaces.  A short distance away is the First Division Museum, which commemorates the distinguished service of our military men and women with interactive exhibits including the Landing at Normandy on D-Day.  The Estate also features several beautiful gardens including a Formal Garden and Rose Garden.

 

Charming Cedar Creek

Lunch at the settlement's Creme & Crepe Cafe for a unique crepe entree.  In 1864, Cedarburg, WI was the perfect place to channel the rushing waters of Cedar Creek to build a stone mill to produce woolen goods for the Union Army in the Civil War.  The mill operated for over 100 years until 1969.  Today, Cedar Creek Settlement occupies the site with over 30 shops including antique stores, gift shops, artist's studios, a forge, and a potters studio.

Senior Meetings

Come on out on the 2nd & 4th Thursday of each month to the Lincoln Center Community Room across from the office. (*2nd Thursday only June, July, August, November & December).  Listen to speakers, find out information on group outings, holiday luncheons, special events, socialize, play bingo and more.  The meetings are from 1-3pm.  Anyone 50+ is welcome!

Senior Nutrition Program at Lincoln Center

Be one of the many seniors who enjoy a hot lunch in room 19 at the Lincoln Center,  Monday thru Friday.  GHCS operates the Senior Nutrition Programs.  The program provides an opportunity for seniors to participate in socialization, bingo activities, exercise and a meal that provides 1/3 of the daily nutrition requirements.  If you or someone you know is 60 years or older and is interested in participating or receiving more information, please call 219-838-0114 between the hours of 8:30am-12:30pm and speak with Dorothy.  You must sign up 2 weeks in advance.

Community Band

Rehearsals begin the Wednesday after Labor Day until the 3rd Wednesday in July.  Bring your instrument and meet us in the Highland Middle School Band Room, from 7-9pm.  Anyone High School age or older interested in joining us please contact Steve Strains at sstrains@nirpc.org .  Indoor concert at the Lincoln Center Fieldhouse in the Spring. Senior Strides

This 60 minute low impact aerobics combined with weight training, resistance bands for muscular endurance and play balls for coordination.  This class is sure to give you a workout from head to toe and is modified for all levels and abilities.  Please bring hand weights, resistance bands a small play ball.  Check with your doctor before starting any exercise program.  This is a 4 week session (8 classes).

This resistance style in water exercise helps the range of motion, muscle tone, endurance and coordination. Bring a swimsuit, towel and water bottle.  4 weeks

Yoga

Relaxing exercises which relieve tension and restore good health, breathing techniques for a higher level of vitality, and meditation for clarity and calmness of mind are included.  The instructor has taught yoga since 1970 including 32 years at Moraine Valley Community College and at Purdue Calumet from 1976 - 1994.  Wear comfortable clothing and bring a towel.

Stroller Strides

Stroller Strides is the country's largest fitness program for new mom's.  Classes offer a stroller workout that combines Power Walking and intervals of body toning using the stroller, the environment and exercise tubing.  It's a great way to get in shape, meet other new moms and have fun with your baby.  In addition to the classes, Stroller Strides offers Luna Mom Clubs with fun playgroup activities and community offerings.

Pilates Mat Class

Pilates is effective for all ages and all activity levels.  Considered a broad system of physical and mental training which leads to the health and longevity of our body and mind.  You will feel your body start to change shape with even the simplest exercises.  Through a series of core, back, leg and arm exercises you will feel yourself get stronger each week and gain a new awareness of strength through your core.  Bring a mat and water bottle. Self-Defense

Because our world today is so violent and because "fighting" can get pretty grim, we will focus on avoidance and awareness.  All classes are taught in a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere.  The character and attitude of a person has a lot to do with the amount of violence that is attracted, but this isn't always the case.

Youth Hapkido

This is a self defense course for kids.  Basic escape techniques, blocks, kicks, punches, and tumbling will be taught in a fun environment.

Pre-School Program

Kindermusik

Kindermusik Village - ages newborn to 18 months (lap babies, crawlers & toddlers).

The children in this age group are changing more rapidly than at any other time in their development.  Two key elements to Kindermusik Village are variety and repetition.  Home activities help involve and educate the parent about the importance of baby's musical learning and reinforce concepts learned in class.  Village introduces multiple levels of activities appropriate for the different stages of development in this age range.  Relaxation and social times are built into the 45-minute lesson to meet adult needs.

Kindermusik Imagine That!

ages 3+ yrs-5yrs (3 by September 1, 2009)This class is designed for children to attend without an adult for about 30-35 minutes and then Parent/Caregivers and siblings join the class for the last 10-15 minutes for sharing time.  The first day of class parents stay for the entire class with no siblings.  Within the weekly lessons and at home, your preschooler's unique affinity to learn through pretend play is the foundation to this musical curriculum.

Youth Gymnastics

Tumblebear Gymnastics Team (all classes held in the Lincoln Center small gym)

Whether it is a pat on the back, the words "YOU DID IT" or the feeling of "I DID GREAT TODAY" are all children need to feel a sense of pride in whatever they do. Within the Tumblebear Program all our students will shine as they work to achieve the skills presented to them.  When a child enrolls in the Tumblebear Gymnastic Program, they will begin to work on specific skills in bar, beam, vault, mini tramp, air trak, and tumbling.  The cheerleading class will also work on cartwheels, handstands, round-offs, splits, cheers, chants, stunts, motions & jumps.  *Sign up at least 1 week prior to each session, so adequate number of staff will be on hand.

Cheerleading Camp Summer (5-13yr)

Babysitter’s Training Course by American Red Cross  

This educational and fun program will teach boys or girls ages 11 and up the responsibilities and qualities of being a good babysitter and what to expect of the person who hires you. You’ll learn how to make good, responsible decisions, supervise children from infants up through school age, adjust your actions based on the age of the child(ren) in your care, keep children and yourself safe in the house and outside, choose safe and age-appropriate toys and games, handle an emergency or illness, perform basic first-aid, perform basic care routines like diapering, feeding and dressing children and more.  The full course includes the handbook, certification card and interactive CD. Participants ages 11 to 15 must provide a copy of their birth certificate upon registration. Registration ends when class is full, or 2 weeks before class.

This course is designed with the beginning as well as the advanced student in mind.  Students will learn various techniques of colored pencil, cross hatching, blending, burnishing and how to apply them on a variety of surfaces.  Using prismacolor pencils, students will explore the diversity of this medium and bring to successful conclusion a work of art.
